Sumdog’s free online math contests are a fun way to motivate your students as they compete against other classes and schools, locally or nationally. Scores are based on accuracy – students’ individual scores are based on the number of questions they answer correctly during the contest and the class score is based on the average of the number of questions answered correctly by every student in the class.
The level of questions asked will be different for every student and questions will be based on the results of the students’ diagnostic – so everyone has a fair chance. Click here for more information about the diagnostic tool.
Each Sumdog Contest is designed to provide a fun and educational way for students to learn math. That means we offer a range of questions to keep students inspired and engaged.
Students will be asked questions based on their diagnostic scores, ensuring that they are framed at the appropriate learning level.
Students will need to complete the math diagnostic before they can take part in the contest. Students who have not completed their math diagnostic will not see the contest activity until the diagnostic has been completed.
It is therefore best to set up your class and allow your students to complete their math diagnostic prior to the start of the contest.
In order to ensure that the contests are fair, a minimum class size of 5 students is required to take part. There is a maximum class size in the system of 40 students.
Don’t worry if you’re teaching a small class, there’s still a way you can participate in the event. If you have less than 5 students, you are able to combine classes for the contest period. You can look at our guide here on how to move students between classes.
We should warn you it’s not wise to move your students between classes during the contest period. This will reset any contest score you have achieved so far, and might prevent your students from continuing with the contest.
Note: Class scores are based on the class average so every class, no matter what size, has the same chance of winning.
